Roster of Castings

LSST: September 2008

Primary (M1)and tertiary (M3) mirrors were cast as a single 8.4-m blank. The inner part will become a 5-m f/0.8 tertiary mirror, while the outer part 5.0 to 8.4-m diameter will be an f/1.25 primary mirror. LSST will be located on Cerro Pachon, Chile.

SOML Fold Sphere: August 2006

3.8-m f/3.4 Fold-Sphere for Mirror Lab optical test tower. It will be used in testing the six 8.4-m off-axis paraboloid mirrors of the GMT (Giant Magellan Telescope).

GMT-1: May 2005

First 8.4-m off-axis paraboloid for the Giant Magellan Telescope, to be located at Las Campanas, Chile. The equivalent circular aperture with seven 8.4-m mirrors will be 21.5 m, f/0.7. Shown here the installation of ~1700 alumina-silica cores is nearing completion.

LMC: April 2002

Fourth 6.5-m f/1.25 mirror for optical testing at Lockheed Martin Corp., Sunny Vale, California.

LBT-2: May 2000

The second of two 8.4-m f/1.14 mirrors was cast for the Large Binocular Telescope, Mount Graham, Arizona.

Magellan 2: September 1998

The second of two 6.5-m f/1.25 mirrors was cast for the Magellan Project Telescopes, Las Campanas, Chile. Partners include: Carnegie, Arizona, Harvard, Michigan, and MIT.

LBT-1: January 1997

The first of two 8.4-m f/1.14 mirrors was cast for the Large Binocular Telescope, Mount Graham, Arizona. This casting is the first of a series of 8-meter mirrors made at the Mirror Lab.

Magellan 1: January 1994

6.5-m f/1.25 mirror was cast for the Magellan Project in Chile, a collaboration of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the University of Arizona.

MMT: April 1992

6.5-m f/1.25 mirror was cast in the newly expanded furnace for the UA/Smithsonian Multiple Mirror Telescope at Mount Hopkins, Arizona

USAF: June 1989

3.5-m f/1.5 mirror was cast for the Star Fire Optical Test Range , at the USAF Phillips Laboratory, New Mexico.

WIYN: December 1988

3.5-m f/1.75 mirror was cast for the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO (WIYN) Telescope, Kitt Peak, Arizona

ARC: April 1988

3.5-m f/1.75 mirror was cast for the Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) Telescope, Apache Point, New Mexico

SAO: November 1987

1.2-m f/1.9 mirror was cast in the first full-scale rotating furnace in the new Mirror Lab facility underneath Arizona Stadium. Used for a Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory telescope as Mount Hopkins

VATT: March 1985

1.8-m f/1 mirror was cast in a small prototype, rotating furnace, for the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, Mount Graham

NOAO: August 1983
1.8-meter f/2.7 mirror was cast in an experimental, non-rotating furnace for National Optical Astronomy Observatory. Used for thermal expansion tests.

Calgary: April 1983

1.8-m f/2.7 mirror was cast in an experimental, non-rotating furnace for the University of Calgary, Canada
