On July 30, 1998, the 6.5-meter mirror and its cell were shipped from the Mirror Lab to Mt. Hopkins to be installed in the telescope.  The photo at the left shows the vacuum lifting fixture being lowered onto the mirror to remove it from the telescope cell in the Mirror Lab. The mirror was transported to Mt. Hopkins in a special shipping crate on a special trailer. Further information and many pictures of the conversion, and related shipping and handling can be found on the web pages maintained by the MMT Observatory.  The 6.5-meter mirror and its mirror cell were permanently installed in the telescope in March 1999.
